Market Day In Caltagirone

Over the weekend we went to the village of Caltagirone to go to the market. Before heading to the market we drove around the community taking in the sites and wonderful views. This village is not quite as big as Catania, but not as small as Mineo. However, it does have its own unique appeal. After leaving Caltagirone we headed to Mineo to eat at a pizzeria called Casa Mia. The men that worked there were so generous and kind to us. We had a good meal consisting of swordfish, penne pasta, sausage, fries and bruschetta. Afterward, we came home and relaxed the rest of the day. Oh, and we ate up the goodies that we bought at a bar in Caltagirone~~mmm.. mmm.. yum!!

Another Great Reason to Love Sicily

When you think of the Italian culture the first thing that comes to mind is the great Italian food. Secondly, the craftsmanship of beautiful pieces of furniture, clothing, and pottery. Well, I finally had the opportunity to see an Italian pottery factory firsthand. Last Thursday a friend and I went to the Caleca Pottery Factory. It was magnificent. There were stacks and stacks of striking pottery everywhere! It took about 2 hours to get there, but very much worth it. Inside the factory we watched how the pottery is made and dried as well as a small group of individuals’ hand painting the ceramics. The company is a bit unique because they also do the pieces selected for Williams and Sonoma. I bought me a wonderful set to start off with. I’m looking forward to returning to the factory and buying more pieces to build on. Below are some pictures of the factory.

The factory is HUGE!

The pieces are darker gray because they have not dried yet.
These pieces are ready to be painted.
It's amazing that these ladies hand paint all the pieces!!

There are so many rows and rows of dishes.
So many stacks and stacks...It just keeps going...

and going....

and going....

Finally home and unpacking the boxes!

These are the pieces I selected to begin my collection with. I had so much fun arranging the cabinets’ to fit all the new dishes.

U Can't Touch This!

The other night Jayce was folding the laundry and he decided he was going to be “cool” and put on his dad’s clothes… He came into the bedroom and said, “Look, I’m MC Hammer!!” Then he started doing the Hammer Time dance!! It was funny!! Jayce always finds a way to entertain himself no matter what he is doing.. It’s great!

Hurricane Terror

We’ve been following the recent hurricane events taking place and I feel for all the people that have to evacuate and endure all the stress of not knowing the outcome. I remember calling my mom in tears as hurricane Ivan was crashing over us while living in Pensacola, Florida. Will had duty at the Naval Hospital so we could not leave the area, but he also worked at a local hospital in town so we stayed there during the hurricane’s landfall. I hope we never have to undergo that sort of experience again.

The hospital was hit by a tornado and it was terrifying listening to all the booming sounds of debris hitting the hospital as well as the windows blowing out all around us. The hospital also served the community as a shelter and there were tons of people sleeping in hallways and wherever they could find an open spot. After many agonizing hours we were able to walk outside; it was heart wrenching to see all the damage around us. At that moment all we could think of was to get back to our home to make sure it was still standing. It was our first home and we had it built a couple of years prior so it was equipped with the best hurricane standards, but we lived about 5 miles or so from the beach so we were not sure what to expect.

I’m very thankful that we were able to stay together as a family and that each of us was safe during that time. It was also a relief when we made it to our home and it was still there. The only damage it took on was the landscaping was destroyed and we lost a few shingles.

I met so many people who suffered during Hurricane Ivan and Hurricane Katrina.. and saw firsthand what force a hurricane can bring. My heart goes out to those who are preparing for the hurricanes now.

Market Day In Mineo

Today Lana and I went to the market in Mineo; however, I am not a market type shopper. It’s fun to check it out and it is a great experience with the Italian culture, but I normally do not buy anything unless it is fresh produce and even then I am very picky. Phew- the smell of fish and seeing the chopped up fish parts and slimy eels is not for me.. Blah! I know it sounds un-Italian, but it’s not my style. So many people love it and buy tons of stuff. My reasons for going are because I enjoy walking around and interacting with the Italians. I love the atmosphere and architecture of the buildings and walking on the cobble stone roads. There are always so many people and they are extremely generous and friendly. Each of the towns is unique and has their own style. Also, each one has their markets on different days. Except for Catania, it offers the market every day of the week. The Catania market is HUGE! Usually the markets are located near the Centro (Center) of town and there are other stores to shop in and explore. These are the stores I love!! Not to mention really great bars to eat in! Today during our stroll, after I past the market area I could smell the fresh pizza baking.. It was great and so much better than the previous fish smell!! I stopped in at one of the bars and bought me a Sicilian Cannoli… mmm, mmm, good! Normally I get the chocolate, but today I had the ricotta cheese. It was delicious! After we finished our stroll through the Centro of town we came back home and Lana had sweet peas for lunch. I know she really wanted the Cannoli, but she has to wait awhile! LOL. Below are pictures of the market. ENJOY!
